My mom and I are staying at the W Times Square and was wondering if it was a good hotel, and what safety concerns we should be wary of while traveling in NYC. Any hints with Taxi's? Hopefully the hotel will be able to help us most of the time in getting one to get somewhere. I don't think either of us feels safe taking the subway (plus I don't think we are too direction saavy lol we'd probably end up in Canada by the time we were through). Thanks ahead of time!

taking the subway is fast fun and convenient. its not that i cant afford a cab ride but it takes forever. its very easy, uptown or downtown? you will be in midtown, the closest subway is the N / R line . so if you wanted to go downtown to chinatown, take the N/R downtown.... and get off at canal street.

if you wanna get back to the hotel, take the same N/R line uptown, and get off at 49 street. get it? easy huh?
it will cost $2.00 each way.

so for you and your mom, $8.00

if you want to take a taxi from your hotel, it would cost about $16.00

i love the W hotels... my favorite is the W in union square.

have a drink at Blue Fin bar and watch the tourists go by through the huge glass windows.

You have nothing to worry about. It is in the good area and the hotel does not need to help oyou get a cab. There will be 10 right outside your door. If you are there during the week, then you are going to HAVE to take the subway. If not it will take you an hour to get anywhere with the traffic. There will be 1,000,000 other people in the subway, so it is more than safe!!!
