I know it's a silly question, but it's a big deal to me. i'm wondering if you can be a vegetarian in the army. I will be joining under the ranger contract maybe this fall. i thought those of you who have recently served or are serving in the army could help me out, especially if you're a ranger.

Curtis B nailed the main issue on the head.

You will face both sleep and food deprivation. The weakness from lack of sleep and food everyday will eventually force you to eat things that are against the values of a vegetarian. If you don't eat those things, you are setting yourself up for failure to become a Ranger. Many Rangers coming back from Swamp Phase will attest to the fact that they would catch and eat lizards and snakes to supplement their diet.

If you are prepared for this, you have my full respect. Becoming a Ranger is no easy task and not for the weak. I wish you the best of luck and hope you finally earn the right to wear the tab.

Rangers lead the way!

The Rangers are taught to live off of the land...I don't think you will find many fruit trees and vegetable gardens while you are on patrol. And if you do, it will be considered tresspassing and stealing if you take anything from them. My boyfriend finished ranger school, and he said that he and his battle buddy would catch frogs and eat them raw while they were walking because, even though they had MRE's with them, they didn't have time to stop and eat them. He was so sleep deprived that he fell asleep during any break they had.

But you never know if you don't try!!! So go for it if you want it...but be prepared because your beliefs will be challenged by your will to survive.

Well, they have vegetarian MREs, but to be serious, you will have a hard time in the rangers. In order to maintain your strength through the training, and even after the school when you get to your unit, you are going to have to consume a great deal of protein and carbs.

You will be able to eat vegeterian MRE's from basic till you retire. Good luck.

Well, when I was in basic training (I'm in the DEP) they asked if anyone was vegan. There wasn't any, but my guess is if you were, they'd make provisions for you.

I can't see it being healthy, though.
