As far as the second part of your question, electric resistance space heaters are the least energy efficient, and the most expensive, way to heat something up. Gas is more efficient, and is usually cheep (a lot of your electricity is made by burning fossil fuels like gas in the first place). Gas heaters produce Carbon Monoxide, so be careful!

I don't know about the microwave vs. the stovetop, though. I would guess that the microwave is newer and therefore more efficient.

Depends on the size of the microwave and burner.(in watts). Leghth of the each has to operate to give the same result. A woodburner is the most efficient, but if thr place isn't insulated well, neither are efficient. Depends on what the utility company charges. I actually use both in my house. I set the thermostat about 62-65, use space heaters in the bedrooms while I sleep. Turn them off during the day. Bills have been pretty good this winter.
