I literally stopped and parked the car at the side of the road today, and was really scared that the car might blow up! I've NEVER heard such noise before.. sounds like an empty metal bin with rocks rumbling inside. This noise suddenly appeared, and I was driving at 25mph! The car has been checked at the dealership recently, and was noted in top condition: had a recent refurbished engine with the "works" put in, timing belt checked recently & in good condition. Oil change due, but not for at least another 300 miles!
When I got out of the car, the smell was smokey..then I was for real scared! Am I overreacting?

Had it towed to a nearby dealership, but it's not going to get looked at until Monday! :(

I hope I am overreacting to this... Why is there so much noise?? What could be wrong with my camry?
I hope to hear from you soon!

Yesterday's prelim investigation showed that the air compresser's messed up. They're not sure yet, but will investigate further tomorrow to let me know. I investigated online and there was a TSP AC002-00 A/C COMPRESSOR MAINTENANCE FOR STORED VEHICLES. What does this mean? Does it mean that the air compressor will be recalled? It's VERY expensive to preplace the entire unit from what I found on the net.. (including labor)!

The rattling noise could be anything and is not necessarily serious, if the smoke was white it is water vapour still not serious, if it is blue then it is burning oil now I would be worried.

The AC compressor could be seized, you will need a rebuilt one or try a used parts dealer. It's possible that only the clutch has gone bad. The clutch engages the compressor to start turning. If your AC was not on when the noise appeared, it IS the clutch. It can be replaced without having to take the compressor out of the car, and recharging the freon.

AC maintenance for stored vehicles means there is a procedure you have to do when you put your car away for long periods.
The AC compressor does not like to stand still for long periods, it's recommended that you turn on your AC once a month even in the winter so it does not seize. The oil in the pump gets circulated that way.

If your Camry has been stored for a long time a year or more. It's possibly your AC pump has seized.

The smell was your belt slipping over the pulley of the AC. Did it smell like burning rubber.

It's good that you stopped. There's a lot of possibilities for a noise like that, none of which someone could really answer without seeing what's going on. I doubt if it's more then a loose shroud or something similar, so I vote for overreaction! That said, you were smart to stop and have it towed. Good luck and don't worry all weekend about it. You did the right thing.

You did the right thing pulling over and having it towed in. Could be several things, might be a rod bearing going out, that would make a lot of noises. With a noise as loud as you describe I do not think you over reacted.
