I'm 12 (a girl) and very serious about martial arts. I never really gone to a class(my parents don't have much money left to spend on my classes that i wanna take, i already take guitar and i don't plan of quitting). Some of my friends who are in highschool taught me some kicks and etc and i learned from watching people fight(don't ask, i know it is not proper martial arts). I need to know what types of exercises i should start with and how many of them i should do. Plz help me.

dont let friends teach you little bits.dont try to learn of the internet or a dvd.dont listen to what some ppl have said here. learning from these sources is more likely to get you hurt than help you. if you learn something wrong it makes it 50X harder for you to correct and about 100 x harder for an instructer to correct.its a lot easier to learn and to teach if your taught the right way in the first place.i'm sure if you or your parents try hard enough you can find someone affordable in your local area.if your serious as you say you need to put in more effort or prioritise your other activities.as someone else suggested the local Y will have some sort of classes.most likely judo or boxing.it may not be what you want to do but its a start and better than what youve already suggested.

Hey I Practice martial arts. But I am not conventional, like yourself. Whats important to realize, is that's ok! In fact, I would even say that its a very good thing to do. What I mean by that is many people never advance farther, and actually, not even close, to their own instructors because of this. They dont think ahead, on their own about new ideas, and lessons. Many think of it purely as sport. And from what I see about your character, this will not be the case for you. Those of the true martial art know its a philosophy at heart, that of Yin and Yang. That of Ignorance and the fruits of Bliss. That of naivety and the fruits of Enlightenment. And this is exactly what I would recomend to you, study up, you have the internet at your disposal. Start meditating, familiriaze and understand the beautfiful nature of the dance. Of the Art.

you can download videos of katas (sequences of moves that tell the story of a fight, there's one for each belt and they get more complicated as you move up) to watch how they look and practice on your own. as for getting in shape, Billy Blank's Tae-Bo series is a good cardio/strength workout (the "martial arts" is pretty limited, but it does get you in shape!). I'd also suggest working with light hardweights, say 3lbs to start out, then as you become comfortable moving up. I'd say no more than 10lbs tho, while you're still developing. If you do the katas with the weights in your hands you will develop a strong grip and more powerful punches.

Do you have a YMCA, YWCA or similar organization in your area?

Many offer free lessons to members.
