Please do not answer if you haven't personally struggled with an overweight child! I am not looking for theoretical answers. I want to hear from someone who's really been there. I don't have kids so don't give me advice on how to make "my child" lose weight.

To parents: What have you done to try and get your child to lose weight, and what has been the hardest part?

My niece was overweight. Her mom & grandparents both limited her proportions. They didn't cut out everything; they thought that would just make it harder. She's slimmed down and doesn't eat everything in front of her anymore.

I think this is a family issue, and the entire family needs to be proactive to help the child eat healthy, and focus on getting exercise that is enjoyable for that child. It only takes one parent, grandparent, or any other adult to sabotage a child's efforts towards good eating habits. Also recognize your child's body type, and don't focus on how many pounds they weigh, or want to lose, but rather on health. Some specific things to do are the same for children as for adults: 1) pick healthy foods to cook and serve and have available for snacks, 2) enroll your child in a sport after school that they enjoy, 3) eat meals with your child at the table, and talk to them during dinner to help slow down their eating, 4) encourage physical activity daily, and 5) make sure your child sees a doctor to rule out any physiological issues related to weight.
