Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

Ask Santa Cluas to bring you Map this year. You are talking about two entire continents and those continents have many countires in them. You do need a visa to go from one country to another. So the answer is not only do you need a passport you need a valid visa

yes! you do. They have made it a point that even if you wish to go to Canada or Mexico you need to have pasport.
So going to Suth America... there's no question. Yiou do need a passport.
