A Japanese Chin. Very small and does not yap. But you should always only consider the breed that melts your heart with just one look because sooner or later it will have an accident on the Persian rug or an upset stomach on the sofa. The dog who has that special melts your heart look you will forgive and be the best home for. Take a look at the toy breeds on the AKC site each breed also has a video link and a thorough description.

Ok, here goes... I've seen a few people who recommended a Beagle. Beagles are great dogs. I have always owned beagles. But I have never, ever had one who doesn't bark a lot. Barking, or howling is a beagle trait. It's in their genetics.
I would recommend a mini dashound however. These can be very stubborn dogs, but they are very loveable. And as an extra I have never known a dashound to be excessive barkers.
Dashound really do make great family dogs.

Please look into " smaller dogs"you need to define " big" as in Great Dane size or German Shepard's?? If so stick with the cuddle kind.. medium size dogs CAN be a handful if the person is not used to any animals.. for small dogs, nice choices are Yorke's, Poodles, Schnauzers ( mini), Yorkie poo, snoodles,Lhasas, just " google' small breed dogs and check it out.. Please remember that getting a dog from a shelter will not only give a needy dog a home, they come vaccinated and spayed or neutered.. and they NEVER forget how you sac=saved them.... If you MUST get a pure breed, PLEASE find a reputable breeder through the AKC... there is nothing worse than falling in love witha puppy or dog only to have it come up with a life threating disease soon after purchase

Depends on the person but I have found being a breeder and showing Boxers that they are pretty good.I have had no problems with mine and in fact I used to take one to work with me when I was a trainer...for people to see that the ones I had only looked scary...mainly because of the ear crop.
Having said that I must point out that it really depends though on where you get the dog from and the temperament of the sire and dam. If the dog has not been socialized or come from dogs that are breed based on sound temperament it does not matter what breed you get.... you could have problems...

Greyhounds are big dogs, but they are very laid back & gentle. They are the best behaved dog I have ever seen. I can't see anyone being scared of them once you spend time with them. You can search greyhound rescue to find a rescue in your area. Most rescues have meet & greets where you can go to see the dogs. The bark very rarely, so they aren't very scary.

If you're scared of big dogs, you will be twice as scared of small dogs! Small dogs are very yappy, fragile and nippy. I would suggest a small to medium sized dog. Bichon Frise, Sheltie (Shetland Sheepdog), Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Boston Terrier, Beagle, Brittany (Spaniel), Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (American Cocker Spaniel), Basset Hound or Dalmatian. They are a few of the many medium sized dogs. Go to http://www.gotpetsonline.com/pictures/gallery/dogs/medium-sized-dogs/Page2/ for a list of medium sized dogs that you might want to consider.

I would get a beagle--a good medium size dog. However, its the small dogs people should be more afraid of ...they tend to be much nippier and quicker to snap. Big dogs like golden retrievers are very sweet, you just have to be introduced to larger breeds.

so, if you are scared of dogs, are you adopting one?
or do you just want to get over your fear of dogs... Often times, there are groups in cities who certify dogs for visiting kids in hospitals, etc. those dogs have to pass tests and must be gentle and well trained. to get over your fear of dogs, you should call one of these groups and ask for their help.
but if you are adopting a dog, and it's your first dog, you should adopt a slightly older dog (maybe 4 or older), from the golden retriever rescue group near you. and many shelters have lovely and sweet older dogs -- I just adopted a sweetheart 5 year old dog from the pound. you'll know instantly if the dog is sweet and mellow or not.

A minature Schnauzer is a great little dog for people who don't really like big dogs.
