The main active ingredient in most energy drinks is not caffeine, it's taurine. Then they add caffeine and sometime ephedra. You could be allergic to the taurine but chances are, you just haven't built up the tolerance to it you have to caffeine.

Believe it or not, Red bull has about 30 mg less caffiene in an 8.3 oz can than does an 8 oz cup of coffee. But, take into consideration all the other things that energy drinks have in them, like ginseng (whose side effects include the inability to sleep), guarana (a concentrated plant source of caffiene), and sugar (I am looking at a can of Amp, an energy drink put out by Mountain Dew, and the can has almost 60 grams of sugar). Despite popular belief, taurine acts as an antioxidant and is not shown to increase energy. It's probably a combination of the caffiene and the high sugar content that is giving you the jitters.
Speaking from experience, if you drink a lot of energy drinks, you will probably develop the same tolerance to them as you do coffee.

Read the ingredients on the Energy drink. They do contain caffeine but they also contain taurine, guarana, B-Vitamins, Ginseng, L-Carnitine, Ginkgo Biloba, and I suspect a LOT of sugar as well. So although the caffeine may not be bothering you, one or more of the other ingredients may. And don't feel bad, I can't drink too much of the stuff without shaking either.

going to sleep after drinking a pot of coffee is not having a high tolerance for coffee. You have the opposite reaction to coffee. And the energy drink has more caffeine in it and it makes you jittery, etc. that happens to me to, I was told to stop drinknig coffee

It clearly indicates that the so called energy drinks you take contain some amount of alcohol in it . It might not be its original content but due to some post reactions like fermentation etc. some alcohol or any other harmful chemical has been formed. The symptoms are clearly of alcohol content.

Have you seen the ingredients in those drinks?!? They are loaded with chemicals. Coffee only has caffeine and has nothing on those energy drinks.
