Using jewelry wire and shower curtain clamps for a base for your toys is ok. Small cat toys with bells, toothbrushes, wood blocks and small plastic toys (mcdonalds toys) to thread on this is fine. I have made several toys for the birds in the store, and it really isn't too hard. Do not use items from outside, as this can introduce mites and other bugs to your cage. Do not use treated woods. Hope this helps and good luck.

For birds, if you live a wooded area or have pine trees any where near here is a simple toy/treat.

Find a small pinecone. Take either peanutbutter or honey and coat the outside of the pinecone with it. (do this over newspaper or something so that you can avoid a huge mess). Then take the seed that they usually eat and roll the pinecone in it. You can then suspend the pinecone inside of the cage for the bird to peck at whenever they feel like it.

There are many different recipiets online. A very good site is http://www.birdsnways.com/birds/ideas.htm it has many ideas on what you can do for your pet bird in the way of homemade toys.

As for dogs if you know how to sew a little you can make your own stuffed animals. You can do the same with cats (put a little cat nip in there to really keep them interested.)

Hope that helps.

You can take any spare wood or twigs without bark and make a swing for the bird .Also use steardy rope so it doesn't fall. Hopefully your bird has fun.
If you have a ball of yarn ,almost any cat would play with the yarn. Just tie about a foots worth of string to something that it can hang from, have fun.

/Birds like to rip stuff up. Toilet paper/ paper towel tubes are great. Also natural rope and plastic chain from the hardware store make fun toys. Bells with a clanker are okay but jingle bells are dangerous. If you bring in tree branches make sure the tree isn't poisonous or sprayed with insecticides. You may also want to let sit in the sun or bake/boil the branch to kill any parasites.

do not use wire. ive had to remove it from a birds face before
do not use a toothbrush. the bristles, if swallowed, will puncture the stomach. dont use pine, pecan is better. do not use cedar, as its oil is extremely toxic to birds.
DO NOT use cat toys with bells in them. my bird got his tongue stuck in the bell of one of the damned things yesterday and made it bleed.
do not use yarn, their feet get stuck in it and they will chew their toes OFF to get free.
do not use the pinecone, it has sharp spikes on it, duh!
do not put in stuffed animals, the stuffing is toxic to them if ingested

strips of vegetable-tanned (not chemically tanned) leather, wiffle balls, crystal pascifiers, jute twine, little kid toys (rattles, the wooden letter blocks, etc), small cow bells.

also, you can go to your local lowes or home depot and ask the people in the shipping room if you can have the cardboard cylinders that the shrink wrap comes on (empty of course) and use a curcular saw to chop it up into 1 inch pieces, my bird LOVES these!
while you are there, get some plastic chain, its 85 cents a foot.
also, popsicle sticks soaked in cool-aid overnight make a cheap and fun treat! toilet paper rolls are good, chopped up or just slid onto a perch whole.
shoe strings are great, they love to chew the plastic ends off of them. any little wooden or plastic beads that are TOO BIG TO SWALLOW. that is important.
good luck!
