I think most are familiar with the rough variety, as made notable by the borders in the movie Babe. But there are indeed 2 varieties.

per AKC description :

Coat
Two varieties are permissible, both having close-fitting, dense, weather resistant double coats with the top coat either straight or wavy and coarser in texture than the undercoat which is soft, short and dense. The rough variety is medium in length without being excessive. Forelegs, haunches, chest and underside are feathered and the coat on face, ears, feet, fronts of legs is short and smooth. The smooth variety is short over entire body, is usually coarser in texture than the rough variety and may have slight feathering on forelegs, haunches, chest and ruff. Neither coat type is preferred over the other

Rough coated is the long coat and smooth coated is the short coat. Go to the website provided. The first dog on the left is a smooth. Scroll all the way to the activities section. The first dog on the left is a rough. There is a semi-rough length that is generally argued about because people say it is either rough or smooth when it doesn't really qualify as either. Basically smooths have hair less than an inch, roughs have hair longer than an inch, and everything in between is a semi.

Rough coat means it has kinda curly hair and smooth could mean long soft hair or short soft hair. It doesn't really effect there size or personality or anything. Its just how fluffy they are.
