I'm sure stories are inspired by real cases, but pleeaaaase know that Law and Order is NOT even close how the real justice system works.
I worked for years as a criminal defense investigator and trial assistant. I'd always help pick juries and man oh man....potential jurors where always shocked how dry and un-hollywood the justice system really is.

Yes many take thier "themes" from real life events. They may have a different ending, ( like the bad guy really going to jail)
And most of what you call the sick ones are most likely more liekly to be the more realistic ones. There are alot of sick people out there doing crimes

in the beginning of the show it gives a statement saying that the story is fictional, but it seems like they get some ideas from events in real life.

I think some of the ideas for story lines are taken from headlines but they then dramatize it for entertainment purposes. sometimes real life is sicker then fiction
scary huh

The storylines are very loosely based and dramatized from real life cases.

It couldn't be so good if that stuff was made up. No one can actually make that up and not be a decent person.

Yes, they do - as they often say in the ads, "Ripped from today's headlines..."
