Depends on what "supported" means to you.

Can you buy it and run it on a new computer?
- Yes (as long as the system is certified for the OS...others "may" work).

Can you buy it and run on existing hardware?
- Microsoft provides a utility to check your existing system for compatibility so this would be a maybe.

Do existing third party applications run on Vista?
- Some will work out of the box. All depends on the implementation by the vendor and if they were thinking forward to supporting Vista.

Are peripherals supported on Vista?
- Carefully check the vendors website for compatibility. I've seen plenty of complaints on driver issues (don't exist or not full featured as on past MS OS's).

As for when it will be supported, any new operating system takes time to work its way into the masses. I would hold off on upgrading it if you are on MS Windows XP, at least until Microsoft ends support for it. By that time, hopefully Linux on the desktop will be more widely in use and vendors (games in particular in my case) will have moved off Microsoft's platform (or at least included non-MS platforms). Waiting for SP1 for Vista might be reasonable too. If I remember correctly, it is slated for late this year (to fix bugs as well as add some of the features MS left out to get Vista out the door).

AT THE END OF TIME. Vista was built from nothing, so if software is made to support it the software can't work with anything else.

If you mean when will Microsoft give you free help with it, never. If you mean when can you pay Microsoft $100 or so to solve a given problem with it, right now.

i wish it would lose all support and they would be forced to release a more user friendly operating system ... not one designed to spy on you ... but maybe after the first service pack release ..
