That would make Pat Robertson the pusher. I have personally met some pushers in my time and none of them seemed more untrustworthy than Pat.
But seriously, you have to look at the definition of Addiction to get your answer. So based on the person, Religion would be an addiction if it totally consumed their life to the point that they loose rational. For example: branch davidians or the Westboro Baptist Church (the phelps family). They are so consumed with religion that they have lost all rational cognitive ability. They are addicted, but I would say that your average bible fearing grandmother isn't.

Hope in anything but God is foolish.
You can call anything a religion. Just ask yourself what you look forward to.
Religion itself can be addicting to those who don't truly know God, that have never had that supernatural experience with truth. It's the supernatural experience that so many are after these days; just look at entertainment these days. People are tired of the lameness that the world offers. A part of them is dying and they don't know why. They don't worship the true Creator God.

Oh yes I agree with that so very much. I think the addiction is actually mans need to feel part of something and not isolated. It is a psychological thing I learned in my one college term. I however, seem to be mildly addicted to sex, I am trying to overcome this addiction by increasing my adrenaline rushes by doing outlandishly dumb stuff for my age.

No addictions are enslaving and anything that enslaves is sin according to the apostle Paul. Religion is a way of life and a way to life. Addictions are something you are pulled to do but you hate, something that will get you in the end. God pulls you away from the things that will get you in the end.

Of course.
Thats why so many people brought up with a religion stick with it. Because a need has been created since they were kids and to remove religion leaves them with a void in their life where religion used to be. Kinda like heroin. You get used to it and when you try to stop you cant understand how you could ever live without it. Eventually that goes away, but it takes a little time, (a little time during which theres plenty of opportunities for a relapse)

Opium for the people as Marx said, to keep the working classes in anesthesia when the rich ones had their fun, well, How much fun really is it in Hollywood??? seems most people there are unhappy.
And Marx was wrong quite simply, Jesus and Mary rock.
And if the Resurrection of Jesus would not be a fact, we would be the most sorry ones.

If you look at how many are former drug addicts and alcoholics, I would say there is a large percentage with addictive personalities. For those people, religion becomes their new fix. I'm not saying this is true for all people, but I would say it's a good percentage of them.

religion can be an addiction without the negative side effects. The sickness occurs when people think they are better than others.

I would agree with that.
But I prefer to call religion a CRUTCH. some thing they use as an excuse to do or not do something. That way they can avoid being responsible for their own actions.
Why do you think is Bush in Iraq? "because God told me to".

No, I wouldn't call it an addiction. I don't know of any of us who attend church compulsively or sell our belongings to give to a church.
Having said that I will say there are those who feel they must be at every church function, would go to worship when they oughta be in a sick bed and so on.
God has given each of us responsibilities that we need to take care of and, I think, a sense of healthy balance.
No matter what you will have those individuals who cross the line and obsess..........
