I am looking for a bike that I can ride do minor trail riding (just asphalt/road and light dirt), with a budget of $200 - $400. Any tips? Thanks in advance.

The type of bike you need depends on the terrain you'll be riding. You may want to consider what's known as a Hybrid, something along the lines of a Trek 7100 http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1312600&f=27
This would give you the best of both worlds, you could go with a MTB but they don't do well on paved roads. The Hybrid is just something to consider. They cost around $429 new.

The best solution for a "hybrid" would be a standard geared mountain bike.

You can use it easily on roads/asphalt, however bike designed specifically for the road will have too narrow tyres for off-road.

giant has some sturdy steeds that fit the description. also, GT bikes make a few good hybrids.
