We live in Hawaii now and so BAH is very high, almost $2000 a month and I was considering moving back in with my parents (in Texas) for a while then getting an apartment in the area for arounf $500 a month in rent instead of the $1500 we currently pay and so save tons of money. BUT that can't be right...I mean my husband SWEARS that he gets the same BAH regardless of where I live but I find it hard to believe. Sounds too good to be true...Does anyone have any experience with any thing like this?

Here is an exerpt from teh Fort Hood PAO for the FRG.

"Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH)

Active Component:Soldiers:

BAH rate remains at home station rate, even if dependents relocate. Rate varies by rank, dependent status and assigned permanent duty station.

Soldiers entitled to BAH before deployment generally continue to receive BAH unless other circumstances change (e.g. commander revokes authority to reside off-post)

Likewise, soldiers not entitled to BAH before deployment generally continue non-receipt unless other circumstances change (e.g. spouse uses POA to clear government quarters)

Special storage of household goods (HHG) does not impact receipt of BAH. Soldiers may draw BAH and store HHG even if not maintaining a residence as long as authority to reside off-post remains."

Sounds like your about to go all the way to the bank on this one. Yes it all depends on where your husband is stationed. It all depends on your zip code when your in. I was in I got paid to be stationed at Pendleton but lived in L.A. So yes you will rate hawaii bah. Do your husband a favor, take him out have a good time. If possible have him request leave. Dont go anywhere just relax at home and have a good time. Be faithful while hes away and write him every other day. Party and have fun right now. Go to church. I wish you guys the best of luck and tell him when he gets back to go to the local VFW there will be a bunch of free beer and good friends waiting for his return.

Yes, as long as you both are still married to each other you will get BAH where ever you live while he is in Iraq. The Army has a responsibility in taking care of the soldiers family. You can stay with your parents and still get your BAH. You might get the BAH where you are staying.

Yes, he will still continue to get his BAH no matter where you live. It is based on his duty station. I was in the same position a year ago, so you are not alone in this type of situation.

I believe your husband is correct.

BAH is calculated based on his rank, time in service, number of dependants, and the zip code of the base where he is permanently assigned (PCS'd) to. In your case, he is assigned to Hawaii and he gets the rate for that area.

So if you choose to go to your parents in Texas while he is in Iraq, he should continue receiving BAH for where he's assigned, not where you actually live.

To be 100% sure, I would ask your housing or finance personnel about this.

actually, yes. you would continue to receive Hawai'i BAH.

But the move back is all on your dime. you would have to store all of your household goods somewhere on your own dime. If you live in housing, you lose housing and go to the bottom of the list when he gets back. you would have to store your car in Hawai'i, or pay to have it shipped CONUS.. or buy a car in TX.

you would lose COLA for yourself and any kids.

Think long and hard about whether or not it is finacnially feasible.. not to mention.. you will be away from the support center of the base. Many times, information cannot be dissemintaed over the phone or via email, only in person, so you run the risk of being out of the loop.

You may crunch the numbers and realize you wouldn;t be saving all that much money at all.

While he is deployed to a combat region you get...1. Tax-Free Exemption 2. Continue full BAH 3. Combat pay (I believe it's 225-250 per month) 4. Sep pay (250 per month). Besides that...if you choose to move back to TX, the military will not foot the bill for you to move back and forth. He is entitled to only one funded move per PCS...and (DLA) Dislocation Allowance (but this you have to ask for, if you don't, you won't get it). And regarding location...if you move back to TX and claim residence in HI that would be considered fraud...so be careful about that. When in absolute doubt...please consult your base family service center. It's better to get the real answer than to go by rumor-mill that alot of young service-members generate.

Yes, BAH is based on his home duty station. In this case Hawaii.

yes thats right, i moved back home while my husband deployed last year. and they payed me BAH amount from were he is stationed at in our case..fort polk, LA so i moved back home to Arizona and got the pay rate for fort polk which is only 710 so nothing nearly as much as you but...i strongly recommend you move back home while hes gone, cuz from personal experience i tried to stay at fort polk when he first left and i couldnt handle being the that house alone without him so i went back home and i was around family that loved me and i wasnt dwelling on the fact that he wasnt around...good luck sweety and move back to texas and save that money! lol
take care <3
