Here is one that is free, reliable and up to date. You can also run it, from a CD, before you install it. If you want to dual boot it with another OS you can do that. Also once you install it, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. It's called UBUNTU (if your system has less than 256MB of RAM install XUBUNTU)

Windows Vista, or XP, I have not tested the new Mac OX, but windows OS seem to be the best..
