It was the Stuka Dive Bomber. The wheels did not retract on this plane and the loud noise was created by the unique fender over
the tires.

Junkers Ju 87 Stukakamferwagen - commonly known as the "Stuka". Entered service with the German Luftwaffe in 1938, still in use when Germany surrendered in May 1945. The early Stukas were just used as divebombers (with special sirens mounted under the wings to scare the daylights out of people they were divebombing - that's where the distinctive sound came from)

After 1943, many Stukas stationed in the Soviet Union had large cannon pods attached under each wing, so they could be used to attack Soviet tanks - by the end of the war, as the Soviet Army rolled into Germany, almost all of the remaining Stukas were used as anti tank aircraft.

Stukas had a two man crew - in the front was a pilot, who also served as the bombadeer (he'd aim the aircraft at the target using the large window in the floor beneath his feet as a primitive bombsight) in the back was a radio operator who sat in a rear facing seat and also served as a tail gunner to protect the plane from being attacked from behind by enemy fighters.

You said plane and some of the German Stukas did make a characteristically terrifying nose. But none went relatively high, at least compared to rival planes of the day.

I can think of only one German thing of that era that did both, the V-2 rocket. Like the V-1, ("V" for vengeance), it had a eerie buzzing nose that chillingly stopped just before it crashed somewhere. But the V-2 went much, much higher. It was actually the first object to penetrate the earth's atmosphere.

The Stuka dive bomber had actual sirens attached to the permanent landing gear.
When Germany attacked Poland, they used the Stuka to terrify and scatter the polish ground troops. It was Germany's pin point bombing system. On the first raid, guess who was the squadron leader? Lt. Schwarzkopf! Know that name?

Junkers Ju-87 Stuka

Not as great as people think, it was almost obsolete by the time the war started and was quickly replaced by planes like the Fw190 on the front line.

You're not thinking of a plane. Probably. I believe what you're describing is the V-1 rocket. Also called a "buzz bomb" because it used a pulse jet engine.
