Basically, you will have one functioning kidney, and one that is only partially functional. The stint is a tube that goes from one kidney to the other. That way when they take the other tubes out, there is a place for the one kidney to drain to. Without the stint, the kidney couldn't drain and would release all the toxins into your body, and wouldn't dispose of them the way they were supposed to. It could also make the good kidney bad because it would over work the good one. Eventually, you may have to have a transplant, but if this works, then it's possible you may never have to worry about it.

The kidneys are amazing organs. They can function with only part of the organ intact. They will still filter toxins out of your blood and create urine, even if you only have a partial kidney and a full working kidney. A person can live on one fully functional kidney their whole life, with no problems. Although, they have found that these people have a higher instance of the other kidney giving out, if the reason for only one kidney was due to disease or function problems. Usually if someone donates a kidney, they don't have any future problems and everything is fine.

This surgery shouldn't be too bad. I will be a while for recovery, but so is any surgery. Just remember to take it easy and to follow all the instructions you are given!!
