I'd love to get a perm, but I'm afraid it will be too damaging. I haven't yet tried scrunching, but my hair is generally uncooperative. In case someone would like an example, here is what I want:

How can I get this without using heat, and about how much does a perm cost? After getting a perm, is there any way to get your hair healthy again?

Please let me know if you have ideas.

perms do damage your hair, but if done correctly your hair should still be pretty healthy (depending on current condition). perms generally won't give you the look your wanting. if you have naturally wavy hair, you can you a diffuser with your blowdryer. otherwise with a 1" iron wrap medium sized section around the outside of the iron while it's closed, and hold for a sec or two. this creates less tension than when you clamp the hair in the iron and then roll it up. less tension translates to a bigger wave. if you're nervouse about damage from heat styling, then use a thermal protector spray. hotsets by redkin is good, and iron guard by CHI is also good.

Try Goody Pillow Soft rollers. You don't need to use heat, you just put them in damp hair and sleep on them (they're comfortable don't worry). The next morning, just finger comb your hair and you've got great waves.

They really work, I've tried them and I have slept in them.

Perm's don't really damage your hair all that much just as long as you don't get them too frequently. But if you want a temporary solution, the pillow rollers are the way to go. You can change up you style whenever you want then!
