That is so cool! No, if they asked you to not get a present, then please honor their wishes. You can make a cash donation to your local shelter and have the shelter acknowledge the gift or you can show them the receipt. If you want, you can also call the shelter and see what the shelter is in desperate need of and you can handle it that way. I'm thinking this child is a little well to do and it is a celebration of the birth. All birthday parties do not mean gifts. Good luck and kudos to the parents of the birthday child!

Donate to the animal shelter like they have requested. The animal shelter here where I live sends the child a birthday card thanking them for all the donations that were made for the childs birthday. If you take anything to the party I would just make it a card saying Happy Birthday and what a nice idea it was to donate to the shelter. Obviously the family must be animal lovers and will appreciate you for doing as they ask in helping to teach there children to help take care of the less fortunate ones in the world.

Just make a donation to an animal shelter then get a nice card for the birthday child. Inside it write out which shelter you donated to.
If you feel generous, why not see if you can "adopt" a permanant resident of the shelter with a gift. Most shelters then give the person in whose name it was adopted in an update every month or so.

This is a wonderful chance to teach your child about giving. Go to the local animal shelter with your child and explain to him/her that instead of a gift, his/her friend would prefer to help out the animals.
As for the birthday party, I would not bring any gifts since the parents clearly stated no gifts. You should respect their wishes.

What a lovely idea! I think that's great. Depending on the age of the child, it would probably be nice to get them something small too. If they're really young, they probably won't understand why they're not getting any birthday presents, so in that event I would definitely get something small for the child, but if they're old enough to read and understand, perhaps make for them a lovely certificate that commemorates what they've done (in terms of the donations and what they will do for the animal shelter).

DO NOT bring a present. How would the other kids feel if your daughter brings a present and they don't?
The kid probably has way too much stuff anyway and parent's have their own guidelines for what toys they find acceptable. I think it is great they are supporting the local animal shelter. Don't feel like you have to donate more than you can afford though. Generally charities only list who donated, not how much.

It isn't normal - and what a shame!
You can make cash donations to the shelter and ask for some sort of "gift was made in the name of so-n-so" card.
I don't think it would be improper to go to the party with flowers or balloons and a card, with the donation card tucked inside. Anyone that accepts private donations can provide you with a little something.
Its a lovely gesture - and a very good example for the kids. Kudos to the mom who's throwing the party!
I hope everyone has a blast! (And I hope no pinatas will suffer NEEDLESSLY!)

I would buy a card and put $5 in it and a write in it how much you've donated to the shelter. What a cool thing to do, it not only gives the shelter much needed cash but teaches the birthday child charity and compassion.

I would suggest a gift card to walmart so that the child can go gt things for the shelter that they would like to give, or they can spend it as they may want. I think that is an odd way to have a birthday party, but will suit a great cause. What an idea!!!

I think that is a very thoughtful alternative to personal gifts...just make a check out to the animal shelter the guest of honor chooses.
