OK let me see if I can clear some of this up for you.

Thin- set is what is used for laying tile...it is however a type of mortar. Thin-set mortar to be exact. Most people in the trade just call it thin-set though! John hit it on the money with the fortified thin set. I am not aware of the particular product he mentioned but a "fortified" mortar has latex bonding agents mixed in. It makes it more...."sticky" ...if you will. It is hard to recommend a particular product for I know not where you are or your exact tile application. I'm going to guess you are in the U.S. and laying floor tile.
Somebody said that brands aren't real important and I agree with that but I use a thin set made by "Custom Building Products"... it's registered trade name is "Versa-Bond".. There are a few different types of Versa-bond...., regular and fortified and they both come in gray or white. It cost a bit more but I recommend using the fortified in white because the gray can sometimes bleed through very light colored grouts if you are messy with it. If you can't find fortified thin-set mortar you can buy a liquid latex fortifier..it's an additive you use in place of water when mixing. I have been known to use it even with the fortified thin-set for extra bonding!! I hope this helps and haven't confused you to near suicide!! Good Luck!!

IN my opinion Mopar, Flextile, Laticrete thinset mortars are the way to go. These are the best on the market today

brands are not that big of a deal (there is a quality that needs to be met in order to be sold), just make sure that you are using a thin set if it is for tile.

You dont use motar on tiles. Motar is for bricks.
To fix a tile to a surface I would use selleys uni-fix (has bulldog on tin) and to fill in the gaps between the tiles you use grout.
Davco make all sorts of grout.
