In the past, Kodak made a special forensic digital SLR that had an extended infrared sensitivity range, but this model was discontinued years ago. The only 'true' current forensic DSLR I know of, is the Fujifilm S3 Pro UVIR, with extended sensitivity ranges in both the ultraviolet and infrared region (see link below). You might also want to add special UV and IR strobes (try Sunpak), a high contrast ruler to place beside the subject for reference, a calibrated colour chart to verify skin tone discolorations etc. A neutral density filter would be handy, but don't use a polarising filter instead as this may distort natural colours. A ring flash is indispensable for evenly illuminating your subject from a close distance. As for lenses, a 50 or 100 mm macro lens is a must for sharp close-ups, a moderate wide-angle (28-35 mm conventional film camera equivalent) for general overviews of the crime scene, and a 50 mm (film camera equivalent) for neutral, undistorted pictures that resemble the same field of view as the human eye. Long tele lenses are seldom used in forensics, they are however widely used in surveillance operations.

Of course, much depends on the rules concerning the admission of forensic evidence in your part of the world.
Btw don't forget to include a notebook and a pencil to make notes and sketches.

Crime Scene Investigators use SLR cameras, mostly DSLRs in the larger counties. Check out the Nikon D40 or the Canon Rebel XTi to get you started.
