Well, I can tell you right away that though there are movies out there, you're just not going to get the same experience as someone who trains in person, face to face. If you really want to learn to fight effectively, I would suggest finding a good dojo with a nice crowd, and taking a martial art. Just make sure you feel comfortable with the art and make sure that YOU think its effective, not just the general public.

if you want some good practical stuff, try http://www.sammyfranco.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=DVD

have a look through the titles.
though I suggest learning the basics first and getting some sparring hours under your belt before relying on DVDs, these DVDs are actually appropriate and practical. his site has training DVDs that are not getting taught in dojos, so it is good stuff. straight to the point.

so if you are new to martial arts training or fighting in general, start here. but nothing beats the real thing.

You can watch a video a thousand times but not be taught a thing. You are expecting to get reactionary response from an inanimate object. You may mimic a video, but you will not get any feedback from it. You need that to truly learn any real Martial Art. Unless you have a teacher to help you apply what you have seen or are mimicing from that video all you have are empty movements.
