Because we tend to want to fix things. Some people who have had an alcoholic father tend to marry an alcoholic man. They think that it will turn out right this time. They will be able to "fix it." It is a cycle that needs to be broken. Some people can only break this cycle with some type of professional help.
I agree it does not make sense to the those who do not tend to do this but people with difficult childhoods suffer all sorts of trauma that shows up in the adult life.

It's human nature to want to stay with things that are familiar - even though by doing so, situations may not improve .
For many people, change can be very scary . It often requires stepping out of your comfort zone to accomplish any real useful results . And yet the very things we fear are the ones that can help us grow , and expand our horizons !

It depends on what they're doing - if other factors have changed, that may lead to them expecting a different result, no matter what they do.
