As a general rule, that is absolutely true. It is not a safe practice.
However, if you are trying to get a credit report, I am afraid you will have no choice but to supply at least your Social Security number. You credit records are tied directly to your S.S. #.
I am not certain why they would want a credit card number if you are just getting a free report, but it may simply be for identification purposes. Obviously you wouldn't want just anyone who happened to get your S.S. # (like your employer) to access your credit information without your consent.
As long as you are sticking with one of the 3 major credit services (I can't recall their names, one of them is Trans-union), you are probably safe. Look for that little padlock icon in the bottom right hand corner of your Internet Explorer window to make sure the information you are entering is secure.
Hope that helps!

If you have to give someone a credit card number then it is not free. Make sure to read the fine print before you commit to anything. You can get a free credit report every year from annualcreditreport.com. They will not ask you for a credit card but you will need to provide your social security number to prove your identity.

If they are requesting a credit card number then you are not dealing with the FTC site to receive your free credit reports. You are dealing with a scam site.

Generally to get your credit report you will have to give your SSN. Just be sure you are dealing directly with either the credit bureaus themselves or the FTC site.

uuhhh ok are u that silly???? yea its silly cuz u could get your identity stolen. it got here approximately to my dad a pair of weeks in the past its a especially frightening component! and if somebody has ur credit card # they might not be waiting to bypass use it in a save cuz for sure they don't have the actually card yet they are in a position to bypass everywhere on line and in basic terms put in your style and purchase even though they want. except u desire to be in debt 4 stuff others offered then do not do it.
