Do no go by reviews of the F or V series of Sigmas. Go by reviews of the E or VE series. I had a 9VE ("value enhanced") model and it was a good and economical handgun for self-defense. It got traded and I probably should have kept it as a self-defense gun for light usage. Mine never jammed. The barrels of the Sigmas are superior to any barrel that you will find on a Ruger polymer gun. S&W makes better barrels than Ruger, period. The trigger of a Sigma feels so much betetr than a Glock, even though it is heavier and a little mushy. And parts are very economical if you need them. But I will admit that Glocks are more reliable if you intend on heavy volumes of shooting consistantly throughout the year.

You will get a lot of answers. My advice is to save a little more and buy a Glock if you want this kind of pistol. If you can't afford a Glock, spend $75 more and get a Ruger.
When I bought my Glock, the salesman tried to sell me a Sigma. When broken apart they are similar to a Glock, but the reviews have been mixed.
I asked about a Sigma a while back if you want to check out the responses.

Also read some reviews online at http://www.handgunreview.com/make.asp?make=Smith%20and%20Wesson
Again, I would rather have a Ruger or even a Taurus in this price range.

I have the First generation Sigma 40F chambered in 40 S&W I love it some people complain about problems I've had none. The one thing that I did do is change out the barrel to accept the .357 Sig round. A 40S&W necked down to shoot a 9mm seems to handle just fine.

I just want to say I had some experience with the early sigmas and they were poo poo. A more telling thing is that most of the time this forum says nothing bad about guns.
I agree wait and get a glock.

S&W had some major design and quality issues with the Sigma when first introduced. They later improved on this but too late to stop the bad reputation. I would personally not buy one.

I bought a first generation S&W Sigma .9mm w/night sights & high capacity mags. I didn't like it. It stovepiped, jammed, failed to feed and generally malfucntioned. I sent it back once, but the problems were not corrected to my satisfaction. I stick to Glock now.
