I have smoked for many years. I know it isn't good for me and hope to be able to quit someday. When and if I do, I hope that I don't consider it my mission to criticize other people for doing what I did. Nothing like a former smoker against smoking!
As for the smoking ban, I agree with banning it in restaurants and places where children are-but in bars? Ridiculous. Besides, the owner of an establishment should make the call on whether his customers can smoke or not instead of someone who never goes in his place of business and never will. Our local smoking ordinance says that we are permitted to smoke in our own homes. How nice of them to allow me to do a legal activity in a place that I pay for every month!
We can't even smoke in the parking garage at work anymore. I guess the few cigarettes smoked in there are so much more dangerous than the exhaust from the hundreds of cars that drive in and out of there daily.
Social engineering. First cigarettes, now trans fats, what will be next?

1. I am an ex-smoker, since quitting I am so embarrassed that I used to smoke, it is the most foul smelling and dirty thing. When you smoke you don't realise how much you smell and how everyone can notice it and be put off when you walk past them.
2. YES YES YES YES.
I hate that when I want to go out for a fun night of dancing or drinking I end up coming home absolutely stinking from cigarette smoke. It goes right through to my bra, and I even have to wash my handbag to remove the gross smell. Also I am sick of being burnt on the dancefloor and having clothes burnt from some drunken idiot smoking and waving their cigarette all over the place.
I always respected others so when I did smoke I would never smoke at bus stops or walking down the street, around shopping areas or parks or anywhere in public. It's not that hard to hold out and just not smoke for a few hours when you are out. Better than having dirty looks from everyone around you.

I am not a smoker, but it seems that everyone else is. When I am riding around with friends and family, if they smoke in the car, I can't breathe, my lungs won't take in oxygen...because there isnt any! :D
I don't necessarily think it should be banned from all places. I am fine with there being smoking sections in large restaurants, as long as they have a good ventillation system. If it is a small restaurant then smokers should sit outside or wait until they finish their meal, only because smoke can quickly accumulate in a small room! :D Other than that, I am fine with how everything is now!

Smoking hasn't affected my health because I do not smoke anymore. My lungs are completely healthy and so is my heart.
Public smoking should not be banned because it is the right of every person to smoke where they please.... Except in private establishments such as certain buildings.
In Oklahoma where I live it is banned now in resteraunts that do not have a seperate area that is enclosed and well ventilated. Every building that doesn't have a seperate room for smokers is "smoke free."
However, public parks and recreational spots, etcetera and so on aren't banned and rightly so.

can't stand the smell of a dirty ash tray which is what people smell like now. I can't believe I didn't try harder to quit before. And yes all public places in maine are already banned from smoking. They are going to raise the cig tax another dollar to 3.00 a pack for the tax now. that is just the tax on it. So glad I don't smoke anymore.

well my grandpa smokes although hes in India wen i think about him i always think that with out smoking and drinking he would have had a much longer and better life also i hate the smell . I think that public places should ban smoking because its harms others more than you when your around other people like when my grandpa smokes during dinner it just spoils the meal and hurts our young cousins. becaus they get huge coughing fits but does grandpa care no same thing when we eat out we like this place except it doesn't ban smoking so we cant eat there any more . so what I'm saying is when your smoke it hurts you real bad hurts others around you worse and you spoil fun holidays (i mean it )also it causes brain damage if you do it around kids. although i love my grandpa i hate smoking i know you get addicted but quit i know its not easy but you brought it on yourself

1) Spouse smokes - now that he is older, he has lung probs. and that limits things we can do, where we can travel. I always thought we'd take vacations and hike in the mountains and go down the Colorado river. Guess again. Eventually, he will be hooked up to an oxygen tank. We never thought about it back in our 20's.
2) I'd love it, but don't see it happening.

people that smoke cigarettes are worse than anyone to be around. They are killing themselves and at the same time killing the people around them. Yes, smoking should be banned everywhere except in your own backyard away from others.

1. I'm a smoker *shrug* there's been dudes who refused to date me after they found i smoked. *shrug*
2. I think in resturants..yes..in like bars and clubs it should be optional. Sort like the clubs in major city areas will get a special permit to be open pass 2AM. I think if they want to be a smoking bar/club then they have to have a special permit/license to allow smoking. It should then be posted that this is a smoking bar/club and if u don't like it then go somewhere else. *shrug* as simple as that.
