My teeth aren't that bad looking, but I do have a couple of cross-bites on the right side of my mouth that are getting worse. Let me know if there is unbearable pain, what habits I should develop, and how often I should have cleanings done. Thanks!!!

i got my braces off a few months ago..there is no pain when the braces are put on..but maybe about two hours later u will feel pain and discomfort..i just dealt with it it only lasted about 2 days for me..u can ask ur dentist for some wax to chew on for the pain. after the pain u wont feel anymore until u go to get them tightned again. sometimes the wire from the braces do cut into ur cheeks..dont drink soda if ur going to choose white rubber bands for u braces, that the color i always chose because they match with everything i didnt do the different colors for holidays or anything..because i didnt want to draw attention to my teeth until they look great..drinking soda causes the rubber bands to turn yellow and it looks bad.

I am 33 and I just got my braces 7 weeks ago. It does not hurt when the braces are put on but a few hours after that it hurts like hell! Have your ibuprofen ready! If the pain is unbearable you can have your Ortho prescribe Motrin. The pain subsided within a week for me.

You will also need to stock up on soft foods. Yogurt, jello pudding, soup, etc. A tip that was given to me was to buy Gerber meat sticks. I know its baby food but 1 serving of those meat sticks have 9 grams of protein and they are oh so soft.
Your eating habits will change. You will notice that you can no longer eat as fast or eat some of the old things you used to.

I have found that I brush my teeth at least 5 times a day. I was advised to buy an electric toothbrush--Sonicare. I floss at least 2 times a day as well. Flossing is a little tricky but you will get the hang of it.

I had my first adjustment last week and there was some discomfort. I was given new arch wires and powerchains. The pain lasted 3 days.

Please know that if you love coffee, tea, curry and mustard, they will discolor your elastics (depending on what color you have). Its best to avoid them but if you have to have the coffee or tea, use a straw.

I hope this helps!!

Dear questioner,
when you receive braces your teeth will have to adjust, which will take about 5 days. You may feel some discomfort and you will start noticing that the braces at first, cut into your cheek which may hurt. To prevent this from happening you might want to ask you orthodontist for some temporary wax to help cover the braces. Also, you may want to consider taking Advil for example, to reduce the pain of the braces. For the short week you should plan to buy soft foods such as yogurt or apple sauce, for your teeth will hurt if eating foods such as grapes. Your orthodontist will tighten these braces every month or so, and you will feel the pain again every time. Just remember, you are making you teeth look better!!

Lots of questions, let me start w/everyone is different. I didn't have "unbearable pain" but what I did do immediately after getting them adjusted was to eat (or chew) something. The discomfort / pain that comes from the adjustment is temporary, it's up to you however. Try to get back to your eating habits as quickly as possible, in other words do you still want to be "nibbling" toast a week later or gettin' your grub on? Invest in a good quality wax to keep on hand in case you get a raw spot inside your gums. Also keep a toothbrush with you, after your meals rinse out your mouth and teeth. It doesn't have to be a perfect job as long as you make sure to get the backs (molars) and are diligent especially at night. stay away from sugary & sticky stuff.if you haven't already your ortho may suggest getting your wisdom teeth out.. do it all 4 at one time and get it over with. I promise you'll be happier than one at a time. lastly, the ortho will tell you FLOSS, get those funny shaped ones that look like an oversized needle. The goal is to not let food get trapped anywhere and get it out right away. You're doing the right thing.. asking! don't give up!

I have braces and for the first few weeks I had a few sores in my mouth. But after about 3-4 weeks it goes away. It will feel a little bit tight and you should get them changed about every month. It's important to keep your teeth extra clean 2. I hope that solves your question. :)

All I can say is that a day or so after you get them and tighten them each month you will feel pressure and pain and you won't be able to eat like foods like burgers, pizza, etc. I always eat soup and jello and other things because it hurts when I bite. It stays for a day or two.

I will be getting braces soon and I am about to turn 24. This is a link to a great site for adults with braces and it provided me with a lot of information. Hope this helps.
