My ex-husband has always had an explosive temper and it has recently lead to the impounding of our dog (she has been living with him since he won her in the divorce but i still consider her partly mine). He was drunk when he went to punish her for "messing" in the house. She bit him and he proceded to beat her. Concerned neighbors called the police and she was taken into custody. He is now giving her up to the shelter and because he says it will put our son in danger is refusing to let me take her. I firmly believe the dog is not a danger to anyone but him but he will not admit it because that would mean he is the one at fault here. If anyone has any ideas or advise I would love to hear from you.

I would talk to the shelter and ask to adopt her, don't ask your ex-husband, and explain the situation. I would also talk to the neighbours that reported the beating and ask them to tell the shelter or right a written letter that he was beating the dog. I can't imagine the shelter stopping you from adopting it.

Your ex-husband has no say in whether you are allowed to own a dog or not. He gave it up

Send a friend your ex does'nt know well to the shelter to adopt the dog for you.
Go into the shelter with them and point the dog out then have the friend do the rest not mentioning that the dog will go straight to you.
Give your friend the money to pay all the fees before you walk into the shelter.Make sure the friend uses his/her address all thru the proceedings and when the dog is released take it home for a happy reunion.
What's your friend adopted a dog and gave it away.No laws been broken. But you should keep a close eye on the poor dog until you're certain your ex is over his snit.Otherwise the poor dog will probably get hurt or killed just so he can have the last and final word on the matter.Hopefully you've put a restraining order on the creep already. If he's abusive to a dog he'll be abusive to the kids as well.

Call or better yet, go to the shelter and explain the situation. With the dog being familiar with you, it would be better for the dog to be with you. However, they will more than likely evaluated the dog. If any food or toy aggression is evident, they probably will not allow the adoption to go through with a child in the home.

Speak the your atty that handled your divorce. Also speak to the shelter. Another idea is to have a family member adopt her and then give it to you as a gift. Just a thought.... Good Luck, I feel bad that you have to go through this and I am sure your son is upset by not having the dog too.

Wait until the shelter puts it up for adoption. Once they put it up for adoption he has no say in where the dog goes. Just be patient.

HAVE A FRIEND "ADOPT" THE DOG. GIVE THE PERSON CASH, NO CHECK, FOR THE DOG. THEY WILL HAVE TO GIVE THEIR ADDRESS, ETC. THEY CAN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT GIVING THE DOG TO YOU. HOPEFULLY THIS PERSON AND YOUR EX DON'T KNOW EACH OTHER. HOPEFULLY YOUR SON CAN KEEP THE SECRET FROM THE ABUSER. PEOPLE THAT ABUSE ANIMALS, ALSO ABUSE CHILDREN AND SOMETIMES OTHER ADULTS.

eehh what a tough spot you are in! Is there any reasoning with your ex at all to maybe give her to you? if he does take her to the pound then maybe one of your friends can go up and adopt her and give her to you =) Well best of luck with your doggy!

When he goes to the centre ... you can follow .. secretly ... and then adopt it when he leaves or you can phone The RSPCA or your animal abusers thing and they can get custody of your dog for you

go to the shelter and talk to the workers. if she has never shown agression towards anyone but him when he was abusing her it shouldn't be a problem.
