Mostly only a**holes would want to be a cop in the first place. And they use their power at every chance they get and think they are better than you when they are some of the most ignorant people out there.

Because they have to be. You will find that the same personality types will prevail amongst other professions like fighter pilots, some firefighters, and several other military high danger jobs. The thing of it is that these particular jobs require a pretty intense personality type to perform effectively. This is what type of person is attracted to these types of jobs. Thats not to say that all these people are the same, but in general, they can be.

You start off in law enforcement thinking of you can help everyone and make a difference in someone's life. By the time you end your career, you wonder if there are any decent people left on the planet. Mostly, all we deal with, on a day to day basis, are the a$$holes. Offenders, who are usually scum of the earth; witnesses who lie to you because they don't want to be involved: and victims who demand the YOU fix all their problems for them, right now.
Example: My partner and I, years ago, came up on a traffic accident. One car was on fire and the driver was trapped inside. The car was upside down on the roadway. We managed to wrench the driver's door open and I had to put my shoulder to the burning car to hold it upright, it tried to roll over to the driver's side (crushed roof). My partner crawled into the car, cut the seat belt off the unconscious driver and dragged him out. Meanwhile, the heat melted the shoulder of my nylon jacket and singed the hair off the side of my head. As we dragged the driver from the car the gas tank exploded throwing burning gas on me and the driver's legs. My partner used his coat to put out the flames on the driver and a bystander used a blanket to smother the fire on my back and legs. None of us suffered any injury to to the fire. The drunken driver did have some broken bones due to the rollover. Not only did this drunken bastard NOT thank us for risking our lives to get him out of the car, he actually tried to sue us for "aggravating his injuries".
There is an old saying in law enforcement, "the longer you are on the job, the shorter your flashlight and temper get". By the time I retired I was down to a Mini Mag light.

Keep that in mind the next time someone steals your car. There will be one of those ***holes who comes to take the report and institute the search for your car. Or, who comes to your home when it's been broken into and you're afraid the thief is still there. It will be one of those ***holes who will meet you and enter your home putting himself/herself at risk to make sure you're safe.
These officers know that they risk their lives every day they go to work - do you? Have you been spit on, cursed at, had urine filled bottles thrown at you? Have you had to try to talk someone out of killing themselves or others? Has your home been egged or your family threatened because of your occupation? Have you had to go back to work after telling someone their loved one died in an accident caused by a drunk driver?
There are hundred of thousands of GOOD officers out there. But, like all of us, they have bad days. You have no idea what they were just doing before they met you. They're probably not going to be terribly sympathetic if you're drunk or they find drugs in your car or you're acting like an ***hole towards them.
Check in the mirror - could your preconceived ideas be influencing your actions and interpretation of their actions?
These men and women risk their lives - can't get life insurance - and potentially look into the pits of hell doing their job. They deserve our respect and gratitude - not questions like yours.

Not all of them. My ex was a cop and he told me as long as you showed them respect they weren't a**holes to you, but if you talked back to them then obviously they would act like that.
