Assuming you are not taking opiods or similar drugs, the most likely cause is a lack of fiber in your diet. Narcotics slow bowel action and more water is absorbed in the colon, causing hard stools. If you don't consume enough fiber, there is insufficient undigestible material in your intestines to maintain a soft stool.

For immediate relief, take one or two tablespoonsful of mineral oil. Repeat every twelve hours until relieved. It's inexpensive and effective. This is for short term use, only. Prunes and prune juice aregood, tasty, healthy long term options.

Then, you need a better diet including cereals, preferably those with a high bran content, fruits and juices, raw and cooked vegetables. Water won't help unless you increase your fiber intake. If you can't manage that, take Fiber con, Metamucil or Citrucel, and yes, with at least one large glass of water.

What Causes Hard Stools

Aside from the obvious of not drinking enough water it could be that you are getting too much calcium in your diet. The recommended daily intake for adults is 1300mg. Side effects of excessive daily intake over 2,500 mg sometimes do cause constipation and increase the risk of kidney stones and urinary tract infections.

A really good tip to help with constipation and soften rock hard stools is to do a simple remedy. Take your weight in pounds and divide in half. That is the amount in ounces of water per day that your body needs. After each glass you have place 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt on your tongue and leave to dissolve. More water can be drunk after to wash it down if you like. So for example if you weigh 150 pounds, you need 75 ounces of water per day to stay hydrated, given of course that you aren't exercising in the heat or over exerting yourself. Then, of course, you would need more. So 8 ounces of water equals a 250 ml glass of water. Then for 75 ounces you would need to drink about 9 1/2 glasses of water per day each followed by the salt on your tongue. I have received enormous relief from major digestive disturbances simply by doing this really cheap and natural remedy. As long as you are drinking the water the salt will only help your body. People are under the misguided conception that we need low salt diets!! Low salt diets lead to a whole host of ailments.........

**** PLEASE NOTE ****

The use of mineral oils for relief of constipation is a very risky activity as they interfere with the absorption of fat soluble vitamins A, E and K. In other words, they will effectively relieve you but will also get rid of essential vitamins and minerals not yet absorbed into your system. Water followed by a pinch of sea salt is very effective and has no restriction on how much water followed by a pinch of sea salt you can have.
