I am in the navy and my finance is due any day now with our first child. The navy is giving me 14 days "baby leave" but noone in my ships office, ie yeoman's know for sure if this leave is charged against your earned leave or if this is "free" leave. Does anyone know? And before someone says no leave is free, there is, i was on convalescent leave for 21 days and did not get charged.

thanks for the smart *** remark about the finance office. i never said they did, but they do control my leave and pay.

yes i am on a sub, thanks for the info,the command is great seeing that she is only a finance but we are and have been living together since i have been at this command. Guess i will just keep an eye on my LES

The 14 days "baby leave" comes out of your earned leave, it's not "free" like convalescent leave.

Two reasons.

1) Your fiance doesn't count as anything to the military. She is not a dependent unless you're married. To the military, her giving birth is the same than a friend, cousin, or aunt giving birth.

2) You are not required to be present at the birth because you're not the one having the baby or having to recover from childbirth.

Therefore, if you choose to take leave to be present at the birth, it comes out of your earned leave.

I am a retired Navy PN. Here is your correct answer. Men don't get baby leave, it is just a comment in the remarks block of your leave chit so your Chain of command knows why you are asking for the leave. Your chain of command is being cool by allowing you to take 14 days of leave for the big event, but it is not free. It is chargeable leave all the way. Active duty Navy females are the only ones that get baby leave and it is 42 days of convalescent leave post delivery. This does not apply to you unless your fiance is active duty as well and in that case she gets the leave not you. Tell your YN (I'm assuming you are on a sub if you are talking YN and not PN) to look up the leave instruction. They should have done this in the first place, but YN's aren't rocket scientist are they.

I don't know since you aren't married what the rules are, I know that if you were married that it would be family emergency leave and it would be up to your S1 to charge you or not. My friend too leave during his R and R but it was for his wife because she was really sick and he wasn't charged, but again I don't know, I would talk to your S1, depending on if you know them and get along with them that maybe it wont be charged.

99% of the time, it is chargeable leave. Some commands are nice and give you Special Lib, or phone muster to avoid charging you for leave, but they are the minority.

It would be charged.unless YOU were having the baby .Medical leave isn't. Medical leave can be considered..non-active time and be added to an enlistment

Baby Leave is con leave for females, but you make be charged like emergency leave.
Be prepared to pay for all of it.

You should not be charged your own leave, they should provide that for you.
