I was recently prescribed avelox for a cold or sinus infection and had a severe reaction. Within 10 minutes I became extremely hot and itchy from my feet to my neck. I then felt my hands swell and cramp closed. My husband called the ems when i couldn't stop coughing and my face became beet red. I couldn't catch my breath. I was able to walk to the ambulance with assistance, but once in there I felt like i would vomit. At the hospital i couldn't open my eyes and had extremely pain and itch in my legs that caused me to thrash my legson the bed. I was given 50 then another 50 mg of benedrill along with adivan. Slowly I came out if the pain. It was not a panic attack. I had them several years back. This was pain, itch, burn and swelling in my legs, neck and hands and difficulty breathing. It has been 24 hours now and i still am having a hard time opening my hands from the cramping. At times i still feel as though my extremities are numb. I would not recommend this .

Wow! I'm sorry to hear what a horrible experience you had!

In answer to your question, Avelox is not sulfa based, it is fluoroquinolone based.

It sounds like you had an allergic reaction to the Avelox, and since that is the case you need to stay away from fluoroquinolone-based meds.

You need to stay away from any antibiotic with "floxacin" in the name. Some brands are Cipro (Ciprofloxacin) and Levaquin (levofloxacin). Many of the 'floxacin' antibiotics are not really used or not even used in the US for human use.

Be sure to tell your physician(s) about your experience, and ask that you never be put on this type of antibiotic. If you would need antibiotics in the future, you can try amoxicillian/penicillian.

Good luck to you!

As a healthcare provider I can tell you that Avelox is not a sulfer based drug. I am sorry you had an allergic reaction. But seriously, I prefer this antibiotic over many others. It is very effective and I rarely have patients that have reactions to it. But ANY drug can cause a reaction to a specfic person. Just be sure that YOU don't take it anymore. It is still a great choice in antibiotic therapy.

sounds like a generalized allergic reaction, I am surprised they did not give you epinephrine intraveneously. Avelox is not a sulfa based antibiotic, it is a flouroquinolone. My information from the Nursing 2004 Drug Handbook by Springhouse publishers shows that what you experienced as an adverse reaction happens in approximately 3% of those who take the drug, but many more experience some sort of adverse reaction. It is a matter of how badly impacted by infection one is as opposed to what the medication will do. Suggest you add quinolone drugs to your record as a legitimate allergy.
