Using the new Adobe Illustrator? I am completely lost.

You need to do it in Photoshop rather than Illustrator. In Photoshop, open your black & white image, go to IMAGE -> MODE then make it RGB or CMYK. From here it is simply a matter of adding color to the desired objects. Using layers makes it even easier. Below is a link to a tutorial...e-mail me or IM me if you need any more help with this.
