My son is 10 and he gets up for school at 7am. his bed time is 9pm on sun-thurs nights. On fridays and saturdays we let him stay up pretty late but not past 11. Maybe as a b-day gift you can up his bedtime an hour :)

Children ages 10 to 12 typically need a little over 9 hours of sleep a night. Naturally, all kids have different activity levels and growth requirements so their needs vary as well. So it's really up the parent to watch how the child reacts to different amounts of sleep. If your child seems well rested on 9 hours (going to bed at 10 and getting up at 7), then it's probably enough sleep for him. If not, set the bedtime for 9:00 with lights out at 9:30. This will give him time to set his own sleep routine without feeling forced to go to sleep as soon as he crawls into bed while still allowing him to stay up an hour later than he's currently used to. I tend to agree with your sons impression that 8 pm is a little unfair for a boy his age. Normally, as kids grow older they are subject to more responsibilities. It's only fair that with the increased responsibility comes increased freedoms.

I think 8 pm is a great time for a 10 year old. If he thinks it is too early then maybe give him another 30 minutes. This way he can feel like he has a opinion on the matter and you actually took it under consideration. This will help in the future to keep communication lines open between the two of you. He is wanting to grow up more and if you give in a little to some of the small requests, then he is more likely to respect your opinion and come to you more often with other things. I remember when I asked the same question about moving my bed time. My parents talked it over together with me and I remember feeling so grown up since they listened to my opinion. You could always tell him that it will be on a trial basis and if he is not getting up in the mornings like he should then he will have to go back to 8pm. Good Luck

School-Age Children and Preteens
Kids ages 6 to 9 need about 10 hours of sleep a night. Bedtime difficulties can arise at this age from a child's need for private time with parents, without siblings around. Try to make a little private time just before bedtime and use it to share confidences and have small discussions, which will also prepare your child for sleep.
Children ages 10 to 12 need a little over 9 hours of shuteye a night. But it's up to parents to judge the exact amount of rest their children need and see that they're in bed in time for sufficient sleep.

8:30 or 9:00 at ten years old what does he really know about unfair? That's a good enough time frame to have a great ammount of sleep plut you get piece of mind imagine your kid staying up until you go to bed you'd never have a quiet moment.

I would say 9:00pm.... give him a chance... if he has a hard time with the hour less sleep then knock it back to 8:30 or 8:00... but at this point he is getting 11 hours of sleep.... he should be okay on 10...

My niece is 10 and gets up around 7:00am. My sister has found that no later than 9:00 pm is always good. maybe you should try to comprise with him and move it to 8:30 first and see how that works out for both of you.

depending on the needs of the child, that young they need 10-12 hours of sleep. I would say 8-8:30, you have to take into account they don't go right to sleep. With my kids, I always know they are getting enough sleep if they wake up on their own with no fighting before their alarm or in my case ( mine are 5 and 6) my alarm. They wake up about 15-20 minutes before hand, so I know they have gotten plenty of sleep.
