There is no certification. There is, however, a constant learning process. I'm a professional photographer and it started as a hobby almost 20 years ago.

You are a professional photographer when you conduct yourself as one. That means building a portfolio and shooting gigs.

If you are truly interested in making a living in photography - start with shooting high school games and community events.

Check out these books from your local library:
"Sell & Resell Your Photos" by Rohn Engh
"Shooting & Selling Your Photos" by Jim Zuckerman

Also find a local photography group. Many people are very helpful and will honestly critique your talent.
Check out a camera exchange store in your area. They usually have classes and events.
Get out there and shoot. Practice develops your talents.

I don't think there really is a certification! If you have the experience and the education, you can call yourself a professional once you start getting paid for your work. Just start applying for jobs, and have a great portfolio ready to go!

Don't know of a basic certificate. The best would be your portfolio of your work. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words.
