The GTI and the Rabbit are two different vehicles. The suspension in the Rabbit is softer and made for a better ride, while the GTI is set for sport and better handling. The GTI has very high insurance rates due to the turbo, the rabbit's rates are very good.
The GTI with an auto will get better mileage than the rabbit as well. Also, the GTI does come in a 4 door model.
The rabbit is a great little car that has allot of space and is very nimble and easy to maneuver.

LOVE IT!

Unfortunately, I needed something bigger this time around, so I couldn't get one. But my last 3 cars were VW Golfs (I wish they had stuck with the Rabbit moniker all along) and they all took me for 175,000+! When I saw the new Rabbit at the NY Auto Show last spring I was heartbroken that it was too small for my needs.

My Golfs were all 5-speeds and they drove plenty fast! You really don't need the extra power of the GTI because the Golf/Rabbit engine has plenty of torque, plus you sacrifice fuel economy when you go for more power. I also like how the new Rabbit looks much more than the new GTI.

the new rabbit is an awesome car and it comes in 2 and 4 door flavors. It gets good mileage at about 25 mpg or so but the 2.0T VW GTi ( stronger rabbit) gets more to 28 or so and fuel wise would be better and offers more sport. Both rabbit and gti have automatic options (the dsg gearbox) though the rabbit can be had with 4 doors but the gti does not.. so if the size and doors aren't an issue the gti is the better bet

Well, if it is anything like the old rabbits - if they got past the rain leakage problem thru the windshield area.....they will be reliable. I drive an 84,and am in mid 400,000km and still going strong.

rabbit is a great, fun car.

I would hold out for a few months for the diesel one to come out. It gets like 50+mpg. awesome cars.

Diesel models really do well with fuel mileage, like 600 miles to a tank of fuel, or 60 Mpg

Its a great car. easy to drive and maneuver. great on gas. excellent handling. rock solid. one of the sturdiest and safest cars on the road. Oh and lots of room for friends and your stuff. Go see one in person. I guarantee you'll be impressed.

I think it is a great little car for the money. Only variable which remains to be seen is reliability, which for VW is shoddy at best.
