That depends on the state. In Ohio, you can. Google "tax" + your state name. One of the hits should be your state's 'Department of Revenue' or 'Department of Taxation'. That is the one place that is guaranteed to have the answer.

start at irs.gov and click on free file. you'll get a list of online providers who services vary as do their qualifications for filing free.
