My soldier is stationed in Germany. He is taking leave in July and we are getting married. I am graduating college in May so there is a possibility that I can go back with him and stay in Germany after we are married. What do we/him need to do to move this process along? He is looking into it too, but I have always gotten great answers here. He is a PFC currently living in the baracks. He says that they will give us private housing if I join him. True?

And if he's (God forbid) ever deployed down range, will the Army pay for me to fly back home? Or am I stuck in a foreign country without my husband?

Also, are there many jobs for civilians while I'm over there?

Thanks!!

Okay here is a rundown on what you have to do.

Get married
Make 10 copies of wedding certificate
Go to his S1, fill out form of marriage, This will change from him single to married.
Go to DEERs and get your ID card,
Go to Clinic and get your EFMP physical and status sheet
Go to S1 and get command sponsorship form, this will put you on the orders
After receiving new orders wait 72-100 hours until form is sent back, then change COLA
If you are on his orders you can be in Germany since Germany is not an accompanied tour.
If you are living with him yes they will give you house, but again this is what you do,
Take all the little forms you have, and if he can't be with you then POA, GENERAL, POA SPECIAL, and go in, make sure that you only have copies and not the originals because they keep everything,
Then you sign a contract and you wait to see a house and then you get a house. Because he will be there for awhile before you I am assuming or will he be going with you, if so then get EVERYTHING done before he gets on the plane, that way the government will pay for HHG House Hold Goods for you and him, and that means like 5000lbs versus 1200 pounds, and that also means that they will start putting him on the housing list right away and you will stay in a hotel or something as a couple versus if he went alone he would have a barracks room and it would be hard for you to come without him having a place all set up.

If he gets deployed either stay in country or pay the money and come home, they will not pay it unless you say you are done with it, and then you can get a ride back, but if you do that then they wont pay for you to come back to Germany when he gets back and it could cause issues depending on his command.

You can work on base, and depending on the base that means like Starbucks, Post Office, Stores, you name it. I would go to www.Aafes.com and see what they have for positions, also look at USAjobs.com those are government jobs and sometimes they show things in other countries. Depending on what your degree is you can get a job in the Finance or anything else on base, most of it is privatized now. Good luck:)

I didn't look at the other answers before writing mine. I probably should have since I might just be repetitive.

He needs to deal with the army end of things regarding housing (Yes, he'll leave the barracks and you'll move into family housing. In Germany, that means a small apt. for a PFC.)

When he's deployed, the army will NOT pay to fly you back home.

There are not many jobs for civilians in Germany. If you have a teaching degree, you could apply to substitute teach at the DoD school there. Go to http://www.opm.gov You can search available jobs around his post and apply online. (That's the Office of Personnel Management website)

Congratulations and good luck!

There are few jobs for civilians. My husband has a degree and the best he can get in Germany is the commissary. You need to start the paper work to get yourself command sponsored. Your husband's S-1 office should be able to help there.
The army will not pay to send you home.
You will get private on post housing. Most likely a 2 bedroom apt. The only bills will be phone, cable, and Internet through TKS. There is no more Off post housing for anyone E-7 or below in Germany. What duty station are you going to I might be able to help you out some more.

after you get married, he will need to get you command sponsored for you to move over there and to get housing.

There are all Jobs on base, depending on what you what to do for work you may have to wait before finding a job you like.

The Army will not pay to fly you home on leave if he gets deploy, but if you give up housing and he moves back into the baracks, they will pay to move you back to the states. I just moved back from germany after being stationed there for 6 years, and I would tell you even if he gets deployed stay there and travel. there is a lot to see and do there.

yes once you are married the Army will pay for him to move his family. once it is all official in the Army. there is off post and on post housing in almost all parts of Germany. As far as the deployment goes I do not want to say for sure how that would work, but there are a multitude of family services available for spouses of deployed soldiers. look into it once you get to his post.

Just remember this like any thing in the Army or military in general, takes time. so do it right and follow up on paperwork. It will all work out.

And on a personal note, God bless you for marrying a service member. that is the best training aid we have is a supportive family.

It all depends upon his command on housing. If He does not get housing he will get extra money for off post housing. As we say on the german economy. If he is deployed the Army will not fly you back home unless you are going to stay home. It's called dependents early out. He will get a paper called orders to have authorization to get you over here. The Military has many programs for support of deployed soldiers and their spouses.
You will meet a lot of friends over here. As for employment there are many opportunities here my suggestion is MWR or DECA for employment. Check the websites under CHARMA

Well it depends on where you are going in Germany. In some places it is easy to get housing, in others you have to wait for a long time.

If he is only a PFC, then he more than likely will have to wait longer for housing, the military sometimes works that way. Officers and Senior NCO's will always get better housing than lower enlisted.

As far as jobs, the only place you can work because of the SOFA agreements are on the installation.

AND no the army will not pay for you to come back home. Honey, you have to pay for it out of your own pocket.

aftre you get married, he has to request an ORDMOD and SOFA sponsorship for you. at the very least he will most likely have to add 12 months to his current orders before they will even consider it. there will be an Overseas screening for you to fill out, you will need both a No fee passport and a regular tourist Passport and you willprobably have to wait several months before he can get this taken care of. plan on at least 6 months.

no, the military will NOT pay to fly you home during a deploymnet UNLESS he requests Early Return of Dependants, but that is basically a PCS move.. you wouldn;t eb abel to come back at the end of the deployment.

they'll give you govt. quarters. you can probably hop from base to base and you'll get back to the states if the army doesn't pay for it. you can work for aafes, in a daycare, or in the schools there. i just got back from germany in august 2006.
