The six year old boy I know is into snakes. You could get him a lifesize rubber snake and he would love it!
Legos are always good.
Don't do anything with batteries or a DVD unless you know his parents are ok with that sort of thing. A lot of people don't like their kids to have too much of that sort of stuff.

B'Daman & Bey-Blades are always good, and if you're really stuck .. what about a gift card ..
kids LOVE shopping for stuff on their own.

legos. the sets that build like a castle or car something like that or a baseball and bat or go to toys rus and ask them what they think. all toys have age ranges on it and they are usually right. but legos is always a good choice, but if hes active id go with an outside ball or baseball.

Alot of little boys are into Yu-Gi-Oh cards, but maybe you could get him a kit from A.C.Moores or Jo Anns fabrics. He might be young, btu an art kit is good for all ages. Maybe a game, if he has gameboy! If you're:
Parent-guinea pig/rabbit! little kids love animals they can hold!
Uncle/aunt- tickets to play/concert/fair
Parents friend- maybe a simple "make an airplane" kit or a basket ball! OOOO, you should get a pixter (Toys r us) with cartridges!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Or- you can get him a 20/25 $ gift card to toys r us/target/walmart so he can get his own gift YOU/parents tske him
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
also, u can get bionicles, magic tricks etc.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
one of the best ideas i've ever heard is to get, for example:
A tackle box w/ fancy/cheap accessories
Maybe a kaleidoscope kit w/ interchangeable lenses
