...Delilah's recently started excessively grooming to the point of self-mutilation(!). The vet said it's a trait common in Siamese & Abyssinian breeds. He also said she might need a kitty anti-Obsessive Compulsive Disorder medication! How much does that sort kind of med cost for an animal?

I got a bottle of Dr. Jean Hovfe's "Obsession Remedy" for my cat and I do think it really cut out her excessive licking and grooming. You can go to www.spiritessence.com and get a bottle for $16.95 - no taxes, shipping or handling charges. It will be mailed to you from Colorado.

I would certainly try that with your cat before you used a drug on her.

I work for a vet and I also have a cat that takes behavioral medication. The cost of this type of medication depends on what exactly it is. There are several types for different issues. My question is- did your vet run any blood work to rule out metabolic causes? Sometimes the thyroid can be an issue. If all else has been ruled out, then explore the medication and don't let cost be a put off, she cant help it that her brain is wired differently. My cat has issues that I am working with different meds to help him get thru the day as well. Good luck!

I did some similar research about excessive disorders too. First of all do you have per insurance? it's just like insurance for us, and can save you some cash. Also the cost will depend on what type of medicine and it's dosage. Have you been able to determine what set Delilah into excessive grooming? A change in her environment, another cat? You may also try some "holistic" or homeopathic if the meds are excessive.. oh try on on line service, (1-800-pet meds) to keep your costs down. Good luck "mom"

Vet makes money off of expensive medication. Instead find an inexpensive bitter to spray on her, and give her time. She won't like the taste, so she'll cut it out. It may also be a desire to breed thing. Will she be going into heat soon? Even spayed cats may react to hormones.

Not very much at all it will just calm her down so that she cant groom herself too much ... i want to say that it cost 20-30$ a month hopefully she will grow out of this problem soon!
remember that vet offices are different and some may be cheaper than others... call your vet and ask him how much it will cost you!

Probably a little less or just as much as medication for a human.

The medication isn't worth the money - it is only for a cat - not a family member.
