The war of 1812 was called the forgotten war, so you are okay if every one else forgot about it!! HA HA.
America declared war on the British due to the fact that the British were harassing American ships and were pressing into service some of those people into the Royal Navy as well as still holding certain terrtories in the US, the US was made up of about 485000 militia and the general populace, the British were mainly made up of about 100,000 Canadian British troops young and highly skilled and very effective as they pretty much routed the American Militia in the early stages of the war, the war is said to have ended in a stale mate with about 17000 American militia killed and wounded and about 5000 British, the British ships bombarded the harbour fort in Boston ( forgot its name), like the first version of shock and awe, but failed to demolish it and eventually gave up, and I believe the words to the American national anthem was wrote by one of your patriots as the British ships pulled away(forgot his name as well).
So we damned horrible Brits burned your capital, and sent President Madison fleeing from his mansion( not sure if was called the white house then) the only President that has had to take refuge from an enemy.
An American envoy was sent to europe to ask for peace, and the British complied, I think its called the treaty of Ghent.
Meanwhile the Americans won a stunning victory over the British at the battle of new Orleans and killed most of that 5000 I mentioned earlier, even though the peace treaty had been signed ( no cell phones in those days ).
It was in many ways it was a funny kind of war, the British were still sucking their thumbs after losing the revolution, The Americans were getting pissed at the fact the British were still around and playing silly buggers with their Navy, The British were war weary after kicking Napoleans butt at around the same time, and now had new empires in the east.
There is a lot of arguments as to who actually won the war, the preffered one is as I said earlier is a stale mate, although there are many American historians now saying that although most Americans think they have never lost a war, they did so lose that one. So who knows!!!
Also did you know that the music to the American National anthem was a English drinking song, I would love to now what the words were!!!

The war began in 1812 and ended in 1815. While the treaty ending the war was signed in late 1814, fighting still took place (Battle of New Orleans) into early 1815 because communication wasn't as fast back then, and in any case the treaty wasn't ratified by the US until early 1815.
