Some people do take them to the cart lines, more will take them back if they had to pay for them (.25 or $1.00 - in Canada).
Some grocery stores are now fitting their carts with an electronically controlled divice so the cart will not work if taken out of the parking area.
Those that leave them all over the place - sheer laziness.

It did happen 10 years ago because 10 years ago was when I had my first job at Winn-Dixie as a bagger. One of my other duties was to go out to the parking lot every hour and get carts
a 5'3" 100lb 14 y/o hualing in 25 or more carts was not fun
People would leave them all over the parking lot and not care I would get really mad when people would see me pushing carts back to the store going right pass them and they still insited on leaving the cart in front of their car instid of just walking a few feet more and allowing me to get it. Otherwise I would have to wait for them to backup and then get the cart.
So no I dont think it has gotten worse, I dont think it has gotten any better either. But at least now some of the workers who have to go out there and get them have these power things that push the carts for them. It must make it alot easier
By the way I dont take my cart back to the store but I do bring it to the cart return

I always take mine back but yes it happens a lot and I'm afraid it happened ten years ago too... Actually nowadays it doesn't happen as much anymore because here we have a system that makes you insert a coin to unlock the cart, only when you put it back with the others do you get your coin back. This works quite well!
Now people just leave the baskets sitting all over the place, instead of stacking them neatly. I mean, toddlers play with stacking toys, how hard is it? Yet people toss them any which way so sometimes they block half the checkout lane...

I totally agree with JO. I am a single mom and always park close to the cart return. You can actually be reported for child abuse/neglect by leaving your child in the car unattended. I have a big problem with people that just leave it in the parking lot. They have cart returns for a reason. Many stores have employees that will help you take your things to your car if you need it. I think it's just plain rude. And as for those of you that think it's the illegal immigrants, I've seen more caucasian Americans leave their carts then immigrants.

A lot of places I go to anymore have cart returns in the parking lot near the cars...if you are too lazy to take your cart to one of those, I feel sorry for you. It's not like you have to go all the way back to the store. Then its the store's job to haul those carts back up to the store. Not that hard of a concept.

People are more inconsiderate these days than ever before. They figure the store should take care of their shopping carts. There are too many immigrants here and they don't follow our considerate customs. They do what they want and force their inconsiderate ways upon us and we pay the ultimate price. It won't get any better either.

I try to park close to one, but b/c i have kids.. sometimes when i put everything in the car and my kids too, i don't want to leave them in the car.. so i will leave the cart in the parking lot.. or offer it to someone else walking by.

People are getting so used to everything being instantaneous that they don't seem to want to make an effort.
I understand your frustration.
What I try to do is lead by example. I put my carts away. Don't care if others think I'm nuts to do it.
Maybe then some of them will follow suit.

Well, actually it did. But it seems worse now because the world is obsessed with nitwits who earn millions of dollars on reality shows, overpaid performers in rehab, and the annihilation of the English language with the terms like "'sup?"
