Dogs should not be kept in crates at all.
Discuss with a friend all the options: leave alone in the room with a blanket? Take with you to work? Leave with neighbour? Dog walker?
If you can't find a solution, you should consider giving the dog to someone with more space/time.
I know this sounds harsh, but the dog is not suffering from separation anxiety, he's suffering from being caged for too long ie. neglect.

I don't use a crate for treating seperation anxiety and clearly it is not putting your dog in a calm mental state.
You need to see a behavioural trainer and get a proper treatment plan, not just get advice from sites like this.
You cannot treat seperation anxiety while at the same time leaving your dog, it is a slow step by step process.
Start by ignoring him for short amounts of time while you're int the room.

See your vet, there are different medications out there, we had to do the same with ours, took over a year for him to overcome it, and it takes a lot of patience, is there a room like the kitchen you can gate or close off instead of a crate? Ours is also claustrophobic we found out he hates confined spaces

Well first things first take him to the vet and get his noes looked at and they may be able to prescibe a REAL drug.
Next, you are keeping him in a crate much too long during the day. Try and ex-pen or a baby gate and put some toys and chews in there. Try a Kong and fill it with peanut butter. Why must your dog be in a crate all day?

Crates are for cruel lazy owners.
Be a good owner and get rid of it and train the dog better.
