Doesn't that make people feel they can do whatever they want because all they have to do is ask for forgiveness? No matter the crime. For those who go to church every sunday, I am talking about in general so this includes people who are christian but don't know much about the religion.

Yes, Its a good feeling knowing that God will forgive me...
But I never go out and commit a sin, and think.."Oh I will ask forgiveness later"
Some do this, I am sure, But God knows what is in our hearts, he knows, our every thought...
This subject gets very deep, as it goes to what our rewards in heaven will be.
Its wonderful knowing we have a forgiving God, but Im not the type of person to take advantage of that fact...

I know it is often taught that Jesus died for everyone and that forgiveness is available to all, but that is simply not Biblical. Jesus' sacrifice was for the elect, His "sheep", the Church. His sacrifice brought forgiveness for those who are His, that work was done once. If you are a believer, you are forgiven, past, present and future sins, that work is complete. If you are an unbeliever, you remain in your sins and forgiveness is not available to you.

Joh 10:11 I am the Good Shepherd! The Good Shepherd lays down His life on behalf of the sheep.
Joh 10:14 I am the Good Shepherd, and I know those that are Mine, and I am known by the ones that are Mine.
Joh 10:15 Even as the Father knows Me, I also know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.

NO, THAT'S ACTUALLY NOT TRUE.
Like those "Godfather" films, they murder, maim, and do all manner of unspeakable things, then they go to church every Sunday. Only to do it all over again. Like doing the laundry.
Do you think they would ever really be forgiven?
Like the Mafiosa said, "It's the life we choose". You bet it is.
Forgiveness is about never going back. You must strive to change to be forgiven - go beyond yourself in reaching. In asking.
Like the second answer says, Repentance is also necessary.
Absolute forgiveness does not give us "carte blanche" to do as we please without consequence. It gives us hope. We have to do our part in asking - and really mean it. You must believe. Now that IS reassuring to know and that's a good thing for sure.

To receive forgiveness a person has to sincerely repent. That means more than simply going through the motions of "asking for forgiveness" today so you can do it again tomorrow. No-one receives forgiveness under those circumstances. Repentence means genuine remorse over having disobeyed God, and a firm commitment not to do it again. Then you can ask for forgiveness and receive it. You can't fool God with fake repentence.

I think I can answer this question most effectively with another question: Is it a good thing for a child to know that their parents will always love them, no matter what? Won't that knowledge lead the child to turn against his or her parents? Obviously not. In the same way, it is a very good thing to know that God will always forgive you. But be sure you belong to His family.

Truly believing that God will forgive you is probably the reason Ted Haggard kept doing what he was doing for so long, and the reason so many priests did so many terrible things to little boys for so long.

Belief in forgiveness is a terrible force.

Hello Honeyluvs,

yes! Its a good thing to know that God will forgive you for your sins, However; we have to remember that it is very important to grow up in the thing of God, and not stay as babies. Because we could get caught in our sins expectantly and die; then what!

If you are confessing Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior then you must grow in the things of God. We have a responsibility to mature in Christ or we could fall short. good luck!

Repentance is also necessary. There is no forgiveness without repentance.
