My male cat keeps getting into all the toilet paper and tearing it to bits. I have tried trimming his claws back, scolding him and every other kind of non-abusive punishment I can think of all to no avail. He is not old enough yet to have neutered so that is not an option at this point. Please help before my husband takes the kitty to the shelter.

BTW, he also climbs on the counter after the paper towels too. I can't keep EVERYTHING behind a door.

Keep the bathroom door closed until he gets the hint. When you catch him doing it, kick him out of the bathroom and just shut the door. This is NOT a reason to abandon a kitty, especially one too young to be neutered! He's just a baby!

ps- declawing is cruel! please don't chop your kitties paws! it is the same as having your fingernails ripped off and then having to go the rest of your life without them, if you can imagine that! whats worse is unlike humans, if cats get outside and dont have claws they will have no protection. Most vets wont even do the procedure nowdays.

Do not use Lysol. It is toxic to cats.

Make a cover for the toilet paper. One quick and easy way, if you buy 2-liters of pop, is to cut out a middle section of the 2-liter container. Once you have a round section of plastic, you can cut through it to make basically a C-shaped cover that you can keep on the TP when you aren't using it. You can make something similar for the paper towels.

Alternately, stop using paper towels and start using real towels. They're much harder to shred, and more environmentally friendly.

Oh my! I have 4 cats, and let me tell you! They all went through the "toilet paper" stage,. Talk about Hog Heaven!!!.
What I did, was made a clear cover (with Plexy plastic) over the roll of toilet paper on the roll. When the cats would get up on the toilet to claw, chew, terrorize, etc.. They were not able to touch it. So, after awhile they just gave up and broke them of the habit. I no longer use the cover and I don't have a problem with destroyed toilet paper.
As for your hubby wanting to take the kitty to the shelter because of his/her "toilet paper terror",. Think of your pet as a child, learning from right or wrong. Animals are a test to us and our patience.

WHATEVER YOU DO DONT CLIP HIS WITTLE PAWSIES!
Get him one of those scratching posts with catnip in them. Put it outside the bathroom so he'll notice it before he goes in for toilet paper. Put them around places where he causes mischeif. He will like it. It has catnip in it, but it wont make him go crazy and get to more mischeif. Once the scratch post is all done (when it looks shredded) , flip it over and it has a brand new post.
Its cheep, like 5 bux but youll only need to buy 1. PS ur cat will LUV IT!

I had a kitten who LOVED to attack the toliet paper, so we bought a basket and made it look nice and put the toilet paper on the floor in the baset untill she grew out of it. Try making a nice basket with a cloth in it and maybe some magazines and slip the toliet paper roll in there.

Your kitty is attracted to to paper dangling from the roll. What I do is a take a hair scrunchy and wrap it around the roll so it does not dangle, and just slide it off when I need to wipe.

my cat does the same thing, i just laugh every time i go to the bathroom and sit down then after my business realize that my toilet paper is confetti. cats will be cats. if you want a cat or even if you want a baby, they will all do things to anger or even stress you. just keep the kitty out of the bathroom. the sad thing is, when i caught my kitty shredding the paper she looked at me like she knew it was wrong. so maybe there is some kind of attention he wants you or your husband to give him.

there is a repellent spray at pet stores that cats do not like to smell .Spray it on places which are taboo and cat will know not to go there. I used it for several cats I had, I let them see and hear me shaking the can, even when the can was empty they would run when they saw me with it(cats are very intelligent)also keep t.p. behind cabinets and bathroom doors closed..
good luck..

Keep the bathroom doors shut, and invest in some kitty toys..There are some that are made from really thin plastic and make "krackle" sounds..It might feed his shredding urge..

I have 5 cats in my house, the best way we have found to keep the kitties from playing in the t.p. was to spray Lysol around near where it is kept. Not only do the cats not like the smell, but you are disinfecting at the same time.
