I have a black lab of about 140 lbs who recently tore a ligament in her left hind leg. She will need surgery. Until I get enough money to pay for this surgery she needs to stay relatively motionless to ensure that she doesn't do more damage. The problem is that even though she's about 5 years old she is very much the playful puppy and doesn't realize how big she is. She's always running or playing with herself not seeming to be in any pain, course maybe the pain pills are working really well. Anyway, any suggestions on how I can keep her stable?

You need to get a large crate, something like a 700 vari Kennel which can double as an airline crate if you ever fly with her, or a large wire crate.I'll put in some links. You search around for the best prices try pet edge, J&B Cherrybrook, Fosers & Smith etc...

Keep her in a small, enclosed area, maybe a kitchen or a bathroom. Also, give her a soft bed to sleep and rest on. Because she won't be able to interact with you as much as she usually would, take some time out of your day to sit with her and keep her company. Maybe read a book or listen to some music. If you keep her in the bathroom, take a bath - relaxing for you, and comforting for her. If she gets lonely while she is by herself, put a talk radio program on to keep her company.

The best way is to crate her when you aren't around to supervise her. When you are around, you will just have to watch her carefully. The vet might be able to splint her leg to reduce the amount of damage she can do to it, also.
