Did you gag at the office when they placed it? If not, then you may not be putting it in correctly. Take your time and look at where you are placing it, don't force it, it should slip into position and then gently snap into place. Didn't you take it in and out at the office? That's something I always make sure patients can do before they leave with a new appliance or prosthetic.

If it gaged you at the office it should have been adjusted then and may need to be adjusted a little more. It's not uncommon, some patients can't stand it touching the soft palate (close to the throat) especially if it's thick.

I'm guessing (which happens a lot) you've taken it out and now your trying to put it back in and just can't get it in the right position and it's gaging you and has you a little frustrated and nervous. Just relax and try again in a few minutes, make sure the "fake teeth" are in the "right place" and bring the partial more towards the front of your mouth (where your teeth used to be) when you try again. Sometimes patients try "too hard" to get it in and completely forget to look at where the "teeth" are, it's a good guide to go by. If you can't get it without gaging just call the dentist and they will show you how to do it. Until you can get to the dentist be sure to keep the partial in water when it's not being worn. Hope I was of some help and good luck! I am sure you will get it in eventually, when you calm down.

You may be able to have the denture trimmed back. This is not a problem as we do this often as a lot of people have trouble with gag reflexes. Just speak to your dentist.

Same here. You will get over it. It does get better with time. There are still times though, usually at the end of a long day, when I will still start to gag and have to take it out in the car. I only do this if I am alone though. Mine are well fitting. It is just something that I am very sensitive to and I have learned to live with it. Good luck.

The partial material is hitting the soft palate and causing you to gag. You should go back for a check anyway if you get sore spots, at that time have the DDS trim back the palate.
