The most common way to get this infection is by eating contaminated food.

The germ can also be passed from person to person in day care centers and nursing homes. If you have this infection and don't wash your hands well with soap after going to the bathroom, you can give the germ to other people when you touch things, especially food.

People who are infected with E. coli are very contagious. Children shouldn't go to a day care center until they have 2 negative stool cultures (proof that the infection is gone). Older people in nursing homes should stay in bed until 2 stool cultures are negative.

Another good side to meat, eh?

E. Coli is part of the normal bowel flora present in human beings. You have given very little information, so you could be talking about one of two possible problems.

The first is E. Coli in the wrong place. If, usually in females, the organism gets from the anus to the urethra, it can enter the bladder and cause urine infections. If this occurred in a child this young it would need rapid treatment with antibiotics.

Second option, she is suspected of having a pathogenic strain of E. Coli in her bowel, this is contracted as a food poisoning organism. 0157 is the strain that has been a problem over the past few years. It is an infection which I have to say is quite dangerous, again especially in this age group.

The results of the tests for organisms usually only take 24 to 36 hours, however it takes a little longer to identify a particular strain of an organism.

The immune system of a baby is not well-developed, so it takes very little to make them ill.

E-coli infection is something that comes from ingestion, meaning eaten or at least orally, meaning putting things into the mouth, something babies are immensely fond of doing.

E-coli also has the distinction of being associated with waste products from human or animal bodies. Excrement, if you wish. It does occur in other ways, but that is the most common association.

Diapers are a possible source, or, does your infant crawl or walk into the bathroom?

Remember, babies have no regard whatever for what they put their hands on or in, and those hands will inevitably go into their mouths at some time.

By far, the most common source of food-borne bacterial infections in the home is the kitchen counter top.

You might have done something as simple as leaving a bottle nipple on the counter for a few minutes, and that may have been what caused it.\, if something was left on the counter and then removed, perhaps hours before you prepared food for the baby.

Keeping baby food separate from all else is very important and keeping everything scrupulously clean is more important.

Cleaning your counters frequently with a mild bleach solution is the easiest., and cheapest, way to reduce bacterial contamination and it is one of the most effective, as well..

She's guaranteed to have E. coli in her stool. She's being tested for the enterotoxogenic strain. The things are ubiquitous. There are coliform bacteria in your drinking water. If you don't have a well, it's a good bet you get your water from a local governmental entity that periodically tests the water for coliform count and lots of other things to make sure the levels are low enough for general safety, but this, like all life, is a matter of statistics. There is no such thing as absolute safety, and what's generally very safe is going to have an occasional exception.

Escherichia coli is a common inhabitant of the animal intestinal tract. Most strains are harmless, but there are about 200 known strains that can cause life-threatening diarrheal disease and urinary tract infections. The source of the E. coli is fecal matter, any fecal matter, human or otherwise. The most common cause of infection is the consumption of contaminated uncooked or undercooked processed meat (think hot dogs, bologna, and sausage as well as hamburger), but infection can also come from insufficiently washed fresh vegetables (don't trust "prewashed and ready to eat" veggies), contaminated drinking water, and any object soiled with feces. Cases have even been documented from fecally contaminated swimming pools (yuck!). Hope your daughter isn't too ill. Good luck.

E. coli can be passed from person to person, but serious E. coli infection is more often linked to food containing the bacteria. The person eats the contaminated food and gets sick.

Here are some foods that can cause E. coli poisoning:

undercooked ground beef (used for hamburgers)
vegetables grown in cow manure or washed in contaminated water
juice that isn't pasteurized (pasteurization is a process that uses heat to kill germs)

It can come from contaminated food.
You hear more and more of this, I believe are immune systems are getting weaker because we are too clean. OK it sounds contradictory but the only way for our bodies to bolster the immune system is to get some bad bacteria or viruses once in a while.

E-coli lives inside our intestines. It only takes her to touch her bottom area and then hand to mouth. You get the idea.

It can occour in baby girls as it is present in poo (fecal matter) and when they fill their nappies they sit in it (might not be for long) but as the passage back into the body sitting on the poo it can enter.

Its really important to keep baby girls extra clean, a bath once a day at least.

This is the most likely reason.
